New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors from the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core policy, did not confirm this decision promptly after his electoral win in November.

"The choice was based on keeping my family safe and the need to focusing my full attention on implementing the platform on affordability the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in Astoria, Queens, a district famous for its vibrant cultural enclaves and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving there, the community will always live a part of me and my work," he said.

Political Debate

During his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

But his opponents, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a place for civic gatherings, and championed significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his humble Astoria home.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city sets limits on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

Tenants consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the price of rent rises faster than the means of many residents.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
