A spending plan that would end the longest government shutdown in American history is heading to the House of Representatives for a critical decision on midweek.

On the sixth week of the political impasse, lawmakers are coming back to Washington to decide whether to approve a upper chamber proposal that would finance government departments for the next eight weeks.

GOP leaders expressed confidence the budget proposal would clear the Congressional body, despite their tight margin. But Democratic leadership pledged to fight it.
