US Admiral to Brief Lawmakers as Cross-Party Examination Intensifies Over Vessel Attack

A senior American naval admiral is scheduled to deliver a classified briefing to congressional members overseeing the armed forces this Thursday, as investigators examine a American attack on a vessel in the Caribbean waters. The incident, which allegedly struck a boat transporting drugs, allegedly involved a second engagement that eliminated any survivors.

White House Defends Strikes as Self-Defense

The administration spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, on Monday asserted that the follow-on engagement was carried out “as a defensive action” and in accordance with laws pertaining to armed conflict. Cross-party examination has mounted over a account that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth issued a verbal order in September to strike the boat.

Democratic lawmakers have said the claims, initially disclosed last week, could amount to a war crime, and GOP members have also voiced their concerns about the lawfulness of the strike on September 2nd. The Congressional armed services committees have initiated inquiries into the recent US armed engagements on vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific waters.

“The Defense Secretary authorised Adm [Frank M] Bradley to conduct these kinetic strikes,” said Leavitt. “The commander acted well within his mandate and the law, overseeing the engagement to guarantee the boat was destroyed and the threat to the United States of America was eliminated.”

In her comments to reporters, Leavitt did not dispute the account that there were survivors after the first strike. Her justification came following former President Donald Trump a day earlier said he “wouldn’t have wanted that – not a follow-up attack” when questioned about the incident.

Growing Congressional Concern and Administration Support

Monday evening, Hegseth wrote online: “Adm Mitch Bradley is an American hero, a true professional, and has my full and complete backing. I stand by him and the battlefield judgments he has made – on the September 2 mission and all others since.”

A thirty days after the strike, Bradley was elevated from commander of Joint Special Operations Command to commander of USSOCOM.

Concern over the government’s military strikes against suspected drug-smuggling boats has been building in the legislature, but details of this follow-on strike shocked many lawmakers from both parties and sparked serious questions about the lawfulness of the attacks and the overall strategy in the area, particularly toward Venezuela's leader Nicolás Maduro.

The congressional members said they did not have confirmation whether the recent report was true, and some GOP senators were sceptical. Nevertheless, they stated the alleged targeting of survivors of an initial missile strike presented grave issues and deserved further scrutiny.

Administration and Military Officials Affirm Stance

The administration commented after the commander-in-chief on Sunday vigorously supported Hegseth. “Pete said he did not command the death of those individuals,” Trump said. He added, “And I believe him.”

Leavitt said Hegseth had spoken with congressional representatives who may have expressed some concerns about the reports over the weekend.

General Dan Caine, the chair of the joint chiefs of staff, also communicated over the weekend period with the two Republican and two Democratic lawmakers heading the Congressional armed services committees. He reiterated “his faith in the experienced officers at every echelon”, Caine’s office said in a statement.

The release added that the call centered on “discussing the intent and lawfulness of operations to disrupt illegal smuggling rings which threaten the safety and stability of the Americas”.

Legislative Figures React and Pledge Investigation

The Senate majority leader, John Thune, on the week's start broadly defended the missions, echoing the administration position that they were necessary to stop the flow of illegal narcotics into the US.

Thune stated the committees in the legislature would look into what happened. “I don’t think you want to draw any conclusions or deductions until you have complete information,” he said of the September 2nd strike. “We’ll see where they lead.”

After the report, Hegseth wrote on the end of the week that “fake news is producing more false, inflammatory, and derogatory reporting to undermine our remarkable service members fighting to protect the nation”.

“Our current operations in the Caribbean are legal under both American and global statutes, with all actions in compliance with the law of armed conflict – and approved by the most qualified legal advisors, throughout the military hierarchy,” Hegseth stated.

The top Senate Democrat, Chuck Schumer, labeled Hegseth a “disgrace” over his response to critics. Schumer demanded that Hegseth make public the video of the attack and appear under oath about what transpired.

The Republican senator for the state of Mississippi, Roger Wicker, the ranking member of the Senate military panel, pledged that his panel’s inquiry would be “done by the numbers”.

“We’ll discover the ground truth,” he said, noting that the implications of the allegation were “serious charges”.

The September 2nd engagement was part of a sequence executed by the American armed forces in the Caribbean and Pacific as Trump has ordered the buildup of a naval group of warships near the Venezuelan coast, including the largest US carrier. More than eighty individuals were killed in the strikes.
