The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Complete Confidence' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a key Champions League match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.
During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a last eight place.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy
The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.
Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and determination he brought to the side.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'
During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing the game, each day you head to training and every day you play a match," said Pitarch following his debut.
"I've just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.
"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can see his capabilities," said the coach. "He's incredibly dynamic, with great stamina, effort and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.
"His standout trait is his character," added he. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand fans might be surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to coach a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before joining the club's famous youth academy.
He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a official senior international match.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.
In a recent interview, the player said: "I have not taken my final decision so far. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."
His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Diaz decided to represent the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.
He played over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team chase trophies to come.
Following his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager treats me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
