As Tuesday dawned citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves breathing dangerously toxic air that fell into the "alarming" category.

Alarming Air Quality Measurements

Multiple areas of the city recorded an air quality index over 500, which equals 10x the safe threshold established by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, equating to 15 to 20 times exceeding healthy standards.

Firecracker Ban and Recent Changes

Since 2020, the government had maintained a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the hazardous smog that blankets the metropolis as winter approaches.

However recently, the newly elected regional government appealed to the judicial authority to seek a easing of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously criticized by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and public health".

Health and Financial Toll

Both financial and medical impact on the approximately 33 million inhabitants calling home the capital region is enormous, according to numerous research.

This pollution causes increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung diseases, and can result in malignancies.

The pollution is estimated to be accounting for approximately 10k premature deaths each year in the capital.
