Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Wave of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the flight.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
Flight Details
The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The team of pioneers also comprised experts in different industries.
The enterprise behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
