Martínez Double Ensures Inter in Pursuit of Frontrunners
Inter striker Lautaro Martínez scored a late double to earn his side a 2-0 victory at Pisa, ensuring the away side firmly engaged in the Italian league championship battle in spite of a less than convincing display.

Under Cristian Chivu, Inter currently sit in third position in the table with 27 points, tied with second-placed Roma and only one point behind table-toppers Milan. Meanwhile, Pisa hold the third bottom spot with 10 points.

Inter traveled in Tuscany looking to return to winning ways after suffering a loss to rivals by Milan last weekend, which was followed by a Champions League defeat at Atlético Madrid. Nonetheless, they were forced to fight all the way by newly-promoted Pisa. The hosts generated plenty of opportunities, but a clinical Inter broke the deadlock in the 69th minute mark when Argentinian Martínez smacked a one-time shot into the top of the net. The attacker then tapped in from close range seven minutes from time.
The team’s capacity to score despite pressure proved crucial in earning three points.

Across in Spain, the Basque side mounted a thrilling fightback from 2-0 down to equalize at home against Villarreal, only to lose to a goal five minutes into added time. Villarreal’s scoring came from Ayoze Pérez just after the half-hour mark and Alberto Moleiro in the 57th minute, but Carlos Soler quickly reduced the deficit and Ander Barrenetxea leveled the score three minutes from time. Yet, Moleiro had the last word late in stoppage time.
In the late La Liga match, Real Madrid journey to Girona requiring a win to go back to the summit above Barcelona, who secured a 3-1 win over Alavés on the previous day.
