Israeli citizens observe two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza peace negotiations proceed
Citizens have assembled throughout the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as talks advanced in Egypt over an end to the war in Gaza.
The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our violent enemies have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.
He also pledged to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The national leadership delayed official remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised on Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives convened in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the plan.
A high-ranking representative familiar with the discussions indicated that an late session of mediated discussions commenced at 7 PM local time.
The representative explained the day's discussions ended without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not recommence fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.
He commented that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the differences between the two sides.
Essential Matters in Discussions
- A lasting ceasefire
- The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for assistance provision
- Post-war management of the territory
Civilian Feeling
In Tel Aviv's public square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling survived the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere appears as home now and until all the hostages return no one will be secure."
"After we see everybody home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can commence heal," she continued.
Near the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their backing for the families of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.
Activist a participant remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement needed for the captives to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."
Research now frequently demonstrate that about 70% of the population prefer the war to end in as payment for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of the gathering, mourners came together to pay their respects.
From that location, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the heavy Israeli bombardment continued.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, sector and zone areas and in the eastern area of the community, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"When the dusk falls, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, explained.
"My family are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who places his head on me all night."
"Every second we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The medical facility in Gaza City said it had received the remains of several people by the afternoon, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part district.
