Both Deceased Students Named in the Ivy League School Attack as Law Enforcement Press On With Search for Killer.

Two students who died in the recent violent attack in Providence were being remembered Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their shooter carried on following the freeing by Rhode Island officials of the single suspect detained in connection in the case.

Tributes for Ella Cook

Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was called “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, according to the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which honored her memory at a ceremony on Sunday.

Her role included the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of the College Republicans organization, the group said. The White House press secretary also expressed sympathies online, remarking: “Words cannot express. Thinking of her family and friends, above all her mom and dad.”

The Second Victim

The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his initial year at the Ivy League university, family members said.

The victim's identification was verified by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He harbored grand aspirations of entering the field of neurosurgery and assisting patients,” his sibling Samira said in a memorial statement.

Details of the Attack

An additional nine individuals were wounded in the weekend shooting in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Law enforcement reported by the end of Sunday that a man aged 24 detained in a police operation at a hotel about around 27 kilometers from the university earlier in the day was released from custody.

“There is a killer at large,” stated Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you must reassess and pursue a different angle, and this is precisely what occurred over the last 24 hours or so.”

Ongoing Concerns

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our public”.

The assailant began shooting inside a room in the building on Saturday, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm handgun, a law enforcement official reported to the media outlet.

Police that raided the hotel found two handguns and magazines when the person of interest was arrested, according to reports.

Those Hurt

Of the nine hurt, one pupil was released from the hospital, mentioned the university president, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in serious yet stable state, and one was in critical condition, officials reported on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

More Condolences

Cook was honored at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at Brown University she was a shining example in that specific location as well.”

The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she worked for her branch and peers,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by Umurzokov’s death in a statement. “Our profound condolences go out to his relatives, friends, and schoolmates and grieve for of his potential.”

The weekend's murders at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US higher education institution with about over seven thousand undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in the current year, according to records.
