Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her US tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
