An Ode to Fortitude: Lessons to Glean from the Splendour of Accra's Cultural Festival.

In the wake of in excess of 50 installments delving into the global Black diaspora, this marks a concluding piece. The experience has been deeply fulfilling, and great thanks directed to all the engaged followers.

Exploring Accra Cultural Week

Attending the exhibitions, presentations and performances of Accra Cultural Week, it becomes clear how superior art nourishes and constructs a nation's past and character. The focal point was undoubtedly Clottey's exquisite [Dis]Appearing Rituals: An Open Lab of Now for Tomorrow, which put his innovative afrogallonism for all to see: a approach that transforms plastic containers into mesmerizing creations, mosaics of golden hues. The exhibition was conceived as a testament to the resilience of Jamestown, a historical area of Accra.

This area – largely populated by the Ga people, a community of fishermen – is also where numerous formerly enslaved people came back from South America and made their home in the 19th century. Known as the Tabom people, they brought Portuguese language and customs.

In every part of Jamestown, you can see a blend of architectural styles. Standing is a historic building, featuring its characteristic Portuguese masonry and door arches. Another landmark is the famous Jamestown Lighthouse, erected in the 1800s and eventually sporting its distinctive striped appearance.

A Culture of Remembrance

Also notable about Jamestown is the ever-present sight of obituary announcements. On every corner, whether affixed to walls or on sizable hoardings, there are announcements and expressions of mourning. In Jamestown, as throughout Ghana, funerals are major community celebrations.

In Clottey’s spectacular exhibition, all of the sensory and spiritual landscape of Jamestown are present – especially in the engaging Jamestown nshonaa work. Here, one is relaxed by the sound of ocean surf with beach material at your feet, while shelters, nets and images of canoes pay homage to its dynamic, generational seafaring tradition. Yet standing in this gallery, one cannot help but think of the mountains of discarded clothing that compromise the charm and tranquillity of the area.

Beyond the Centrepiece

The festival program included additional highlights. Inside an raw space at the local university, artist Sylvester showcased On the Other Side of Languish, an emotionally powerful, minimalist exhibition that featured sculptures and paintings produced in collaboration with artisans.

Also featured was the Yaa Asantewaa Art prize for women artists of Ghanaian origin. It included the inaugural exhibition of a recent recipient, whose work draws on personal family archives to produce a depiction of life in Ghana after independence. The event also announced a latest champion, whose varied work is intensely invested in the weaving practices of women in a specific region.

A Lasting Presence

Although the overseas community has grown been attracted back to Ghana during the colder season, an increasing number are contemplating travelling earlier in the year to experience the region’s artistic calendar. From this festival and regional art fairs, what is evident are creative communities that are not merely emerging or “upcoming” but have established an complete world that is enduring.

Ultimately, the journey offers a vision of Accra that resembles a declaration for ecological stewardship and the preservation of culture. It is a resonant tribute to adaptability in all its manifestations.
